Dom by Anna Hackett
Series: Hell Squad #18
June 17, 2019 by Anna Hackett
Genre: Science Fiction Romance

Squad Three berserker Dom Santora has an ugly past he can’t forget. Born and raised in the darkness, he spent his life before the alien invasion as a Mafia enforcer. He’s found some meaning fighting against the aliens with his fellow berserkers, but he knows his soul is too stained to ever find redemption. And there is no way he’ll ever deserve the quiet beauty of a woman like Arden Carlisle.

When the raptors invaded, Arden lost her husband and children in the first horrible, bloody wave of the attack. Since that terrible night, she’s survived, but she hasn’t been living. Hollowed out by her grief, she’s found a way to keep going as the comms officer for Squad Nine. But lately, color has started to seep back into her world, and the person she sees most clearly is the dark, handsome, and lethal Dom.

Dom and Arden are two damaged souls who find each other in the darkness. But the Gizzida are putting the final pieces of their endgame into place. The aliens want the Earth and to wipe out the human survivors once and for all. As Dom, Arden, and the berserkers work to find a deadly alien bomb, they uncover the true horror of the aliens’ plans. To have any chance at love, life, and survival, Dom and Arden will have to fight harder than ever before.

My Review

Dark, dangerous, and mysterious, Dom Santora has been a character that I’ve been intrigued by from the beginning. We’ve known he used to be in the Italian Mafia but not much else so it was nice to get Dom’s history at last. He might have a checkered past, but Dom is an incredibly honorable and protective man. He’s watched Arden Carlisle from afar but doesn’t believe he’s good enough to ever have someone as sweet as Arden in his life. I loved watching Dom discover Arden’s feelings and realize that he’s worthy of love and caring.

Arden was also a character I’ve been curious about; she lost her husband and children in the initial alien invasion so she’s been trying to live with her grief since then. Finally ready to start living again, Arden finds safety and solace in Dom’s arms. I thought Arden was the perfect match for Dom and they really suited each other well. Arden’s grief has kept her a bit isolated and quiet around others but once she starts to live again she’s tough, intelligent, and not afraid to go after what she wants.

“For love, for hope, for our home. Ever day, we fight so the aliens won’t win. They can’t have our home.”

I can’t believe this series that I love so much is finally winding down because I’ve become so invested in these men and women’s lives. Every story delivers on heart pounding action and sexy romance with a cast of characters I’ve fallen in love with. I can’t wait to read Tane and Selene’s story because that slow burn has going for a long time now! I’m also excited for some additional characters that Hackett introduced toward the end because I just can’t get enough of this world!

**Reader Safety: Hero was abused as a child and forced into working for the Mafia (referenced, off page)

4 stars – it was enjoyable
