Single mom Stephanie is very involved in her son’s school so when she begins spending time with another mom from her son’s class she’s happy to have a friend. But when Emily disappears one day, Stephanie begins to realize she doesn’t know her friend as well as she thought.
This review is outside of my normally reviewed movies because A Simple Favor is definitely not a romance, but I loved it too much to not talk about it. I was invested in the story from the beginning and it kept me guessing the whole way through. I knew it was a mystery but it’s also a comedy and that humor is woven in so well! It’s hard for a movie to blend two such different genres but it’s done really well in A Simple Favor and the bright, well-lit scenes creates a unique viewing experience.
I don’t think this movie would have been as successful without the casting of Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively who play Stephanie and Emily respectively. Kendrick brings an energetic, sweet tone to her character that lends a lot of humor. She’s so earnest in her friendship but as the movie goes on, we learn she’s not as innocent as she appears. As a counterpoint Lively is the perfect Alpha Woman who transfixes everyone around her.
I would recommend this movie to anyone and everyone. Sadly, it’s becoming more rare for me to really enjoy a movie all the way through but this one was perfect. It’s weird, twisted, funny, and just brilliant.
