Rivals by Alison Hendricks
Gaymer Guys #1
LGBTQ+ Contemporary Romance

Finn McLaughlin is dedicated to captaining his professional gaming team, the Cyclones, even though it means he doesn’t have much of a personal life. Nothing can break Finn’s concentration or dedication — except his online nemesis Ryker Winthrop. After a sexy one night stand at a gaming convention, Finn and Ryker go their separate ways until an opening on the Cyclones has Ryker joining and moving into the team’s house. Now Finn has to find a way to resist temptation but Ryker will do whatever it takes to have Finn again.

Rivals was so enjoyable and Finn and Ryker practically set my Kindle on fire with their chemistry! When these two get together they have no problem asking — or demanding — what they want and they’ve certainly mastered dirty talk, especially Ryker. Both are used to hooking up so they’re surprised when they have such a connection during their one night stand. When Ryker ends up on the team, Finn pulls back and insists they keep it professional but that doesn’t last long, much to my delight. I loved watching these two circle each other before finally giving in.

“Finn is like my drug, and all I care about is getting another fix.”

I really enjoyed Finn as character, he’s steady, determined, and a genuinely good guy. Finn has focused his whole life on the Cyclones and they’ve become his family but he always puts them first, even above his own interests. Being with Ryker is the first time that Finn has taken what he wants regardless of the team and while he enjoys himself he also struggles with guilt. I liked the way Finn always thinks things through and considers others when making decisions; he truly made a great team Captain.

I only wish we could have gotten a bit more about Finn’s history and family which felt somewhat sparse against the deep dive we took into Ryker’s family life. Growing up with a cold and demanding father has taught Ryker to lash out when he feels threatened or frustrated. He’s made a reputation for himself in the gaming world as a hothead and an asshole but what Ryker really wants is to be taken seriously as a professional gamer. I worried Ryker’s attitude was going to annoy me but I ended up loving him. He gives his all once he’s on the team and under the surface, he’s really a great guy who just gets fired up a little too quickly sometimes.

This was a great start to a new series and I can’t wait to see where Alison Hendricks takes it next!

Book Details

Finn:
The Cyclones are more than just a team to me—they’re my family. As captain, I give my all to make sure they’re taken care of. Sure, it doesn’t leave a lot of time for me, but I’ve always been able to ignore my own needs. Until Ryker.

I know he’s all talk. But it’s such dirty, distracting talk that it costs me and my team qualifying points. I shouldn’t let him get to me, but I want him in the worst way, and a hookup at a gaming convention seems as good a place as any to get over him.

But when he earns a spot with the Cyclones, all my hangups over this guy are brought to the forefront, 24/7. I expected to give in to my attraction again, but I never thought he’d become an integral part of my team… and my life.

Ryker:
Beating the Cyclones isn’t just about bragging rights for me. It’s about proving to my dad—and myself—that I’m worth more than the internship he’s oh-so-generously offered me.

There’s only one problem: I’ve been low-key obsessed with their captain, Finn, for the better part of a year. He’s everything I want, and everything I want to be—driven, talented, passionate. He also hates my guts, which honestly only makes me want him more.

But it only takes one insanely hot encounter to tell me I won’t be getting him out of my system anytime soon. And when I finally have the opportunity to join the Cyclones and pursue my dream, the one thing I want most of all is him.
