Crazy Rich Asians was a feast for the eyes, from the amazing fashion, to beautiful Singapore, to the gorgeous cast. I’d heard lots of good things about his movie and it certainly lived up to the hype. It was lots of fun, made me laugh and was also a sweet love story all about being with the person you want even when it goes against your family.
I really liked our leading lady Rachel Chu, played by Constance Wu, who is the perfect mix of sweet and strong. She just wants to be accepted by her boyfriend’s family but when she realizes that will never happen, she pulls up her boot straps and lets the strong woman inside come out. I loved the way she stands up to the Young family and proves that she’s a woman you don’t want to mess with. Rachel is the exact type of heroine I want to see in movies — confident, genuine, and not afraid to stand up for herself.
Rachel’s whirlwind experience in Shanghai and her discovery that her boyfriend, Nick Young, is the heir to a fortune creates an engaging and fun story to watch. While I can understand Nick wanting to just be himself with Rachel it was a really dick move to not at least tell her about his family before they go on the trip. I mean come on, that’s not cool man. He completely springs on her the fact that his family is incredibly rich, famous, and that they don’t accept outsiders easily. I can’t forget this serious error in judgement but the way Nick proves his love for Rachel makes up for his mistakes.
