Crashed on an Ice World by Anna Hackett
The Phoenix Adventures #9
Science Fiction Romance
Elana has been in love with her best friend and boss, Rynan, for years and she can’t stand by anymore and watch him indulge in one night stand after one night stand. After a hot kiss leads to Ry pushing her away and claiming it was a mistake, Elana tells Ry she’s quitting. But before he can convince Elana to stay, things go sideways. In search of an ice world that may be the site of a viking treasure horde, the team splits up and the ship carrying Elana, Rynan, and their benefactor, Goldie, is shot down by pirates and crash lands. Now they must survive not only the deadly elements of this ice world but the undeniable tension between each other.
“Yep. Crashed on a fucking ice world.”
“Well, you never hear about people crashing on a nice beach world.”
This was a great adventure and action packed romance and Anna Hackett does a great job (again!) of creating an interesting and unique world to explore. Rynan is a protector at heart and he spends most of the book looking out for everyone else first. Even in his anger over Elana quitting he’ll do anything to protect her. To the reader, Rynan’s feelings are clear but he’s blocked any possible change for finding happiness with Elana. After a terrible childhood he doesn’t trust love and instead he values the friendship he has with Elana. I loved that even though Ry is so protective of Elena, he never tries to stop her from being the tough, strong, and competent woman she is. He trusts her to fight by his side and he respects her skills.
Not only is Elana strong physically, but she’s also strong mentally and emotionally. Just like Ry, she comes from a tough background but she’s found acceptance with her life and has learned to move on in ways that Ry hasn’t. This also means she knows what she wants in life and this attitude is what leads to her quitting the convoy. I really respected Elana in this book because she pretty much has it all. She’s smart and tough, but also sweet and caring. When Ry would get upset, Elana was always there to help calm him down and remind him of his worth. She’s an incredibly good influence on the more volatile Rynan.
I also adored the charming and saucy Goldie who is clearly a woman we can all hope to grow up to be. She’s lively, fun, and lives life to the fullest. In addition to Goldie, the reader also gets some quick looks into some of the past couples and it was great to see these characters again. I can’t wait for more!

He’s her boss. She’s his best friend. These two deep-space convoy security specialists are fighting their simmering attraction…until a starship crash on a deadly ice world changes everything.
Elana Korra loves her security job as a medic on the convoy ship, the Sky Nomad…except for the fact that she’s in love with her boss. Rynan is tough, loyal, and protective, and she knows he will never cross the line with her despite her deepest fantasies. But one scorching kiss sets up a smoldering tension, and as they head off into uncharted space on a treasure hunt to find an invaluable old Earth treasure, Elana knows it is time to make a change—get Ry to admit how he feels about her or leave. But a deadly attack leaves Ry and Elana on a damaged, out-of-control ship hurtling toward an unforgiving ice world.
Rynan Phoenix lives for his job of keeping the Phoenix Deep-Space Convoy safe. The nightmare of his childhood has taught him to steer well clear of romantic relationships, and he’s forced himself to ignore Elana’s compact body and gorgeous face. But when they find themselves stranded on an ice world with passengers to protect and space pirates hunting them down, Ry is forced to confront just how he feels about the most important woman in his life.
Ry and Elana will need all of their training in order to keep themselves alive. As they find hints to the old Earth treasure, their desire turns hotter and deeper…but then they discover that far more dangerous things call this ice planet home…
