This month’s feature blog post is about one of my favorite authors for sweet and sexy, character driven romance. With men ranging from Navy SEALs to nerdy gamers, Annabeth Albert‘s LGBTQ+ romances are some of my favorites!
Annabeth Albert grew up sneaking romance novels under the bed covers. Now, she devours all subgenres of romance out in the open—no flashlights required! When she’s not adding to her keeper shelf, she’s a multi-published Pacific Northwest romance writer.
Emotionally complex, sexy, and funny stories are her favorites both to read and to write. Annabeth loves finding happy endings for a variety of pairings and is a passionate gay rights supporter. In between searching out dark heroes to redeem, she works a rewarding day job and wrangles two children.

How I Found the Author
I am a newbie to the LGBTQ+genre and Annabeth Albert was one of the first authors I read. I can actually remember the exact circumstances surrounding how I found her books. I subscribe to a lot of book related newsletters and one of those is Carina Press. They sent out an email with some of their titles which were available for free and even though I had only read 1 other M/M romance I decided to give Status Update a shot because I was intrigued by a nerdy hero. The rest, they say, is history and I’ve been a one-click fanatic for Annabeth Albert’s books ever since.
Why I Love the Author
Annabeth Albert has become an auto-buy author for me and I typically read her books in one sitting if I can because I know they’ll be amazing and I’ll hate anything that takes me away from them. The characters and how Albert writes them is hands down the greatest thing about her books. I read a lot of romance and I don’t mind external forces leading a story, whether it’s a killer on a rampage, demons trying to take over the planet, or a nosy small town getting in the way. But my true love in romances are always the characters and I adore when they lead a story. I feel like Annabeth Albert could write a romance book and have no other characters then the MC’s and it would still be amazing. Her characters are written in such a way that the reader become highly invested in their story, their successes and failures, and their happily ever after. I always feel like these heroes are real people that I’ve gotten to know over the course of their story.
I also love the variety of heroes we see in Albert’s books. I often feel that romance has a certain expectation of what heroes should look and act like. The alpha hero is always popular, but not every man is ridiculously tall, muscular, and perfect looking. Albert always keeps things different with her characters and they range from hunky protectors to skinny nerds and everything in between. There are no predetermined expectations for her heroes and each one is unique to their personality instead of fitting a stereotype. I love the variety of characters you get in her books and it’s one of the things that I’m always most excited about when a new book comes out.
- Deeply emotional and character driven love stories
- Sweet heroes who you immediately fall in love with
- A variety of reading flavors, from Navy SEALS, to nerdy gamers, to chefs and bakers
- Books you want to read in one sitting because you’re so invested in the romance
Favorite Books by the Author
Off Base: The first book in the Out of Uniform series, Off Base is easily my favorite book by Albert and when it first came out I actually read it twice in four months. Zack is deeply in the closet and worried how his fellow SEALS will perceive him if they knew he was crushing hard on his new roommate Pike. I loved the dynamics between these two as well as watching Zack find himself.
Beta Test: For fans of nerdy gamers, this second book in the #gaymers series is a great option. Tristan and Ravi work together but they couldn’t be more different in personality. Unfortunately, they’re now stuck driving a work van across the country together and things really start to heat up. I adored both men, but Tristan’s awkward, control freak ways really worked for me.
Wheels Up: Also from the Out of Uniform series, this is the most recent release and I was sucked in from the beginning. I loved the idea that Dustin is just now exploring his bisexuality and he’s shocked when his first hookup (with a guy) shows up as his new recruit on his SEAL team. Talk about conflict of interest! Both Dustin and Wes were so compassionate and giving and they almost had me in tears.
Winning Bracket: Taking things back to college, this book offers a wonderful opposites attract romance between two college RA’s who see dorm parties very differently. Edward and Ollie were just so sweet together and I loved the mix of innocence and fire they both bring to the relationship.
The next book in the Out of Uniform series is available April 16, 2018 and I can’t wait! I’ve really been enjoying this series and I’m excited for more!
